Statement from Mayor Sacco on passing of Netta Meltzer

03.26.14_SaccoNetta-e1395865197458.jpgMayor Nick Sacco is sad to announce the passing of longtime North Bergen municipal employee and founder of the township’s Special Young People program Netta Meltzer. Originally hired by the Public Affairs Department in 1985, Meltzer started one of the township’s most beloved initiatives that gives children and adults with mental and physical disabilities activities, parties and a sense of purpose and community. Meltzer retired two years ago and the program has continued under new management in her absence.

North Bergen DPW Riders of the Storm Video Released

The North Bergen Department of Public Works battled the terrain of the second hilliest municipality in the country, tight streets lined with cars, a regional salt shortage and one of the harshest winters in recent memory over the past few months. Through it all, North Bergen’s streets have been as clean and safe as possible and often have been right down to the black. In order to shed some light on the inner workings of the department and to show what really goes into New Jersey’s premiere snow removal operation, Mayor Nick Sacco commissioned a short film called “North Bergen DPW — Riders of the Storm.”

Freeholder Tom Liggio to retire, Sacco endorses Anthony Vainieri for position

02.26.14_7987c.jpgAfter nearly three decades of service to North Bergen and Hudson County, Freeholder Tom Liggio announced that he will not seek re-election last night at a meeting of the North Bergen Democratic Municipal Committee. North Bergen Mayor and State Senator Nick Sacco has endorsed Anthony Vainieri for the open seat, along with the North Bergen Democratic Municipal Committee, the Hudson County Democratic Organization and Freeholder Liggio.

North Bergen to Begin Aggressive Pothole Repair Plan, Launch Hotline for Resident Input

photo-e1393285696556sm.jpgMayor Nick Sacco and Public Works Commissioner Frank Gargiulo have directed DPW Superintendent John Shaw and his department to begin an aggressive pothole repair plan starting this week. The harsh winter with heavy snowfalls and low temperatures have wreaked havoc on roads throughout the region, causing an abundance of dangerous potholes. The township has established a Pothole Repair Hotline for residents to report potholes in their neighborhood and the phone number is 201-330-7263.

North Bergen to partner with North Hudson Community Action to offer Obamacare Seminars

02.04.14_doctors.jpgMayor Nick Sacco, North Bergen Township and North Hudson Community Action Corporation are partnering to present three free informational seminars on the Affordable Care Act to residents starting next week. The seminars will be run by a certified outreach specialist employed by NHCAC and will give participants a chance to learn about the law and how it affects them, see what kind of tax credits or assistance they are entitled to and sign up for insurance coverage.

Legislative Sponsors, Paredes family meet for “Angelie’s Law” Commemoration Ceremony

IMG_7649_cropped.jpgSix months to the day from when their little girl was killed in a horrific accident with an out of control commuter bus, Jairo Paredes and Maylin Hago met with legislative sponsors of the law created in their daughter’s name at a Commemoration Ceremony for “Angelie’s Law” today. Senator Nick Sacco, Senator Sandra Cunningham, Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, Assemblyman Charles Mainor and other local elected officials offered their heartfelt sympathies to the young North Bergen family and explained how “Angelie’s Law” seeks to prevent a horrific accident like this from ever happening again by creating new safeguards and regulations. The event was held in North Bergen Township Hall.

20th Annual Winterfest Draws 5,000 People!

Twenty years later, it has grown into a uniquely North Bergen street festival enjoyed by thousands. This latest edition on December 5th brought nearly 5,000 residents to Bergenline Avenue for a night of Santa Claus, Christmas carols and holiday music, lots of food, games, rides, a petting zoo, gifts, togetherness and great fun!

Commemoration Ceremony/News Conference set for ‘Angelie’s Law’

Mayor Sacco Swears In Seven New NBPD Recruits, Promotes Officer to Sergeant

IMG_0071-e1384450668553.jpgMayor Nick Sacco and the Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a Proclamation honoring the North Bergen Police Department’s Burglary Unit at their regular meeting yesterday. Tasked with investigating burglaries, robberies, street crimes and felony cases the unit has made 85 arrests so far this year and has put in thousands of man hours in prolonged investigations and surveillance. The unit has had a significant impact on public safety and quality of life in the township.

MAYOR SACCO AND NORTH BERGEN COMMUNITY RESPOND TO KENNEDY BOULEVARD FIRE

DSCF7205.jpgMayor Nick Sacco is coordinating relief and relocation efforts for victims of the massive fire on Kennedy Boulevard and 92nd Street that broke out Saturday night. The Mayor has been working closely with the North Bergen Health Department, North Hudson Community Action Corporation, Red Cross and several local community groups and volunteers to organize a food and clothing drives, provide short term housing for displaced residents and help victims find options for relocation.
