The North Bergen Public Library’s brand new Kennedy Branch is officially open and giving residents throughout the township access to the same high standard of library services available at the main branch. Mayor Nick Sacco, Township Commissioners Frank Gargiulo, Theresa Ferraro, Hugo Cabrera and Allen Pascual and Library Director Sai Rao and many other officials joined together with community members for a Grand Opening event on September 21 at the new location, which is located at 2123 Kennedy Boulevard.
“North Bergen’s geography can make it a challenge for downtown residents to get the same services as the rest of the township and we are working to change that,” said Mayor Sacco.
“This great new library branch will give area residents a place to come together for community events and access to our outstanding library services, programs and classes. I am very proud to see it now open and excited to see area residents begin utilizing it,” said Mayor Sacco.
The Kennedy Branch offers many free services to residents, including computers with internet access, laptop computer rentals, a book sharing service with the main library branch, a meeting room and many classes and programs. The township entered into a lease agreement with the property owner earlier this year and also purchased a vacant property nearby and built a parking lot for the facility.
“Being able to offer our outstanding library services to a new neighborhood is a dream come true and I could not be more excited to see the Kennedy Branch open,” said Rao. “I would like to thank Mayor Sacco and the Commissioners for always supporting our library and everything we do. Our entire staff and I cannot wait to begin serving the public at our new branch.”
The Grand Opening event was attended by about 50 area residents who were given tours of the new facility and its capabilities. The event was also attended by Hudson County Surrogate Don DeLeo, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, Library Board of Trustees President Barbara Haberman, Board Members George Bartulovich, Julio Marenco, Claudia Rodriguez and Liz Gonzalez, Township Administrator Chris Pianese, Police Chief Robert Dowd, Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Solter, North Bergen Parking Authority Executive Director Bob Baselice, Deputy State Librarian Kathleen Peiffer, Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS) Executive Director Robert White and Library Services Director Arlene Sahraie, New Jersey Library Association (NJLA) Executive Director Pat Tumulty and Michele Stricker from the State Library.
“I would like to congratulate Mayor Sacco, the Library Board and Library Director Sai Rao for this accomplishment,” said Deputy State Librarian Kathleen Peiffer. “At a time when libraries are closing in New Jersey and nationally, despite increasing use by their communities, North Bergen has shown a commitment to the literacy and lifelong learning potential offered by libraries.”
