Mayor Nick Sacco has announced that Board of Education President Julio Marenco will be joining his ticket in the upcoming May municipal election. Marenco, a North Bergen resident for over 25 years, is an appointed Associate Member of the State Parole Board, holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Seton Hall University School of Law and works as an Adjunct Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Marenco will be running for the seat that will be vacated by Public Safety Commissioner Theresa Ferraro, who announced her retirement at the end of her current term onFriday. He will be joined on the ticket by Mayor Sacco and incumbent Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Frank Gargiulo and Allen Pascual, which makes the slate majority Hispanic for the first time.
Marenco is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, which he joined after graduating from Emerson High School in Union City. He served on the USS Whale submarine and was honored with the Navy Achievement Medal upon his honorable discharge. Julio attended Montclair State University after his service on the GI Bill and later earned his law degree and a Master's in Administration. His service to North Bergen began as an intern in the office of Senator Sacco, and he was later appointed as a Parking Authority Commissioner before being elected to the North Bergen Board of Education in 2002, where he now serves as Board President. He previously worked in state government in the McGreevey, Codey and Corzine administrations in various departments including as a Director in the State Corrections Department overseeing its Equal Employment Opportunity program. He also has significant political campaign experience, serving as deputy campaign manager for Congressman Bill Pascrell's 2000 re-election and later managing local campaigns throughout Passaic County and surrounding areas, in addition to being an active member of the North Bergen Democratic Municipal Committee.
"I am so thankful for this opportunity to continue serving my community in North Bergen that I love so much," said Marenco. "Mayor Sacco and his team are a model for urban municipal government and the achievements they have had are enormous, from keeping municipal property taxes stable to attracting new businesses to keeping our neighborhoods safe and secure. I look forward to the campaign and the opportunity to work with the Sacco Team and contribute to my home town's future."
